The Academy is open to players in Under 16’s, 17’s and 18’s age groups, and will offer a strong link between junior and senior rugby at Devizes RFC, with a focus on high quality coaching and player development.
Director of Rugby Joe Alford said: "There is a recognised issue with a drop-off in player numbers at 16-18 across the country, and our Academy is designed to offer an attractive option to both junior Devizes players and those elsewhere in the county to continue enjoying their rugby whilst training and playing to a high standard. The Academy program will include strength and conditioning, nutrition coaching and sports psychology, so we are looking not only to develop better rugby players but better athletes and individuals."
Please note that Devizes RFC respects the Age Grade approach to rugby development, and whilst the U16 to U18 age groups all form part of the Academy we adhere to RFU guidance: we do not freely mix U16, U17 and U18 players in contact training or competitive game situations. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Junior Chair or the Safeguarding Officer for more information.
Devizes RFC have committed to developing the Girls game by the introduction of two new female coaches to the Girls set up. Rugby is one of the fastest growing ladies and girls participation sports in the UK and with the revival this season of the Devizes RFC Girls section, the two new coaches will be great additions to the Girls Teams.
Aimi May Dallyn. New to Devizes RFC this season, Aimi is a former Serving frontline Army Medic that has played a high standard of rugby for the Army. Now, with more settled roots in Devizes, she has settled in to be a regular within the Ladies section. Aimi has shown a keen interest in the Girls section towards the end of this year and will commence her rugby coaching journey this off season with a couple of courses lined up ready to kick start the 2019/20 season with a bang.
Emma Matthews (Mufty) As one of the longest serving members of the Devizes Ladies Rugby team, Mufty as she is affectionately known, is no stranger to rugby and coaching. A committed player, with a knowledge of several different positions, means she will bring a lot of game knowledge to the girls. A Level 2 qualified coach in her own right, Emma has previously worked with the Girls section of the club before work commitments got in the way. She has also spent time delivering rugby to girls at Devizes School.
One thing for sure is that with the two ladies joining the coaching team there will never be a dull moment! Aimi and Emma join Keith Butler and James Booth in delivering a high level of coaching to the Devizes Girls Teams. For further details please contact girls@devizesrfc.org.uk

With the introduction of the Academy section, there is a clear pathway for our Juniors to transition into the higher levels of the Club, with the aim of as many making it into the Seniors as possible!

Rugby has been played in Devizes from as early as 1876 and one of our claims to fame is the record of having beaten Bath in 1877. The Club as we know it today was formed at the Bear Hotel on 11 June 1931 and so we were able to celebrate 75 continuous years of rubgy in 2006.
A pitch was found at Nursteed Road and the Club was able to use the old Crown Hotel as its H.Q. until 1956, when the Castle Hotel became the Club's new base. Then, as now, players were in short supply, fund-raising was essential for the Club's progress, but the social side of the Club and events such as the Rugby Ball made the Club's reputation. In 1961 the Club moved pitches to play at Hopton on the outskirts of the town.
The Club's outstanding achievements in the 70's include defeating Salisbury twice to lift the coveted Dorset & Wilts K.O. Cup in 1971 and 1973, plus winning the Wiltshire 7's back-to-back in 1972 and 1973. Also, having defeated Camberley, Devizes progressed to the next round of the national knock-out Cup and, on 31 October, 1973, a gutsy performance saw Devizes go down 49 - 6 away to Gloucester at Kingsholm. Gloucester paid Devizes the compliment of fielding their strongest team, which was full of internationals and county players. The 70's also witnessed Charlie's Angels 3XV (and photographs from that era would be very welcome), the appearance of an over 30's XV, trips to Uden in Holland, and the emergence of an excellent Colts XV that went on to win the County Cup in 1980 - the same year that Devizes won the inaugural season of the Dorset & Wilts Merit Table.
